Return of Football

The season opener for the Pies in 2006 was against Adelaide at Telstra Dome on Monday night.  I was lucky enough to score one of the uber Medallion Club tickets from Scott and as usual the seats were brilliant.

And as usual the seats were great, even got to watch some of the Australia V South Africa test...

The Pies played well pushing the crows well, but just didn't have the legs to keep up with them in the long run and went down in a hard fort battle.

Roll on footy season

Image010

Again the footy season is upon us, all supports get out their gear in the quest to support their teams to the flag that we all think we should win but only 1 eventually will.

I’m never off the pies bandwagon, but this year with hopefully no injuries we could end up a serious finals contender.

So roll on footy season ‘06.. So far we are un-defeated..

Pies make it 3 in a row

Its now been 2 days since Collingwoods win in round 11 and I’m sure that I’m not the only one whos still talking about the win and happy to see the boys not only winning, but playing great football.

As it was a Pies home game I was there, but the story surrounding the night is a bit more complex than usual.  This week we played the Cats on Friday night at the Telstra Dome.  Gaynor is a Cats member and decided to organise a group of Cats and Pies people to go watch the game together.  So there were a heap organised to go.  Puss, Anita, Dave, Nicola, Gaynor and Me, along with a couple of others from Gaynors work.

But in the process of planning Friday night, Puss found out that the game was a sellout and we all wouldn’t be able to go..  But as Gaynor and I were members we should have been able to get in as long as we were there early enough to get a seat.

So the plan was for Gaynor and I to meet at about 5:30 and find a seat somewhere.

That all changed when I got a call from work and Kate said that there were 3 Medallion Club tickets available for the game if I was interested.. Was I interested… of course I was..  So I picked up the tickets from Scott in the city and he told me that they were the best seats in the place..  I wasn’t too sure about that but when I got there and met up with Gaynor we soon saw that they were.

Level 2 seats 52 and 53 in Row A, asile 13..  Thats front row, level 2 directly on the wing. I’ve got some photos, but there from my phone so not sure how good they will be.  I also can’t put them up here yet as I don’t have the IR cable for the phone, but i’ll post them soon.

Anywho, onto the game..  And what a great game it was..  We kicked away early and it was only a late charge in the first quarter that made it look a lot closer than it really was.

But it was the second quarter that we opened up kicking 6.4 to geelongs 1.2.  So in for a beer at 1/2 time feeling great sitting on a 7 goal lead.

As expected the Cats came out hard after the long break and clawed the gap back to 5 goals heading into the final quarter, and all tho the cats did win the final quarter by a goal we still ran out victors by 4 goals.

Final Scores:
Collingwood   5.2  11.6  14.11  18.13  (121) Geelong   3.3  4.5  9.10  14.12  (96)

A great game, well played by Didak kicking 5 straight and really opening up the forward line.  So now we wait till the Queens Birthday game against Melbourne next Monday.  Lets hope we can make it 4 in a row.

The pies win 2 in a row

I was not able to convince sharkey to actually go to the game today, so given that he has Optus cable he conceeded to watch the Collingwood V Hawthorn game at his place.  The game started out well with us kicking away in the first quarter holding a sizeable lead and looking to blast the game open.

But in the second and third quarters Hawthorn hit back and were only 2 points behind heading into the final quarter.  As we did against West Coast last week we came home with a solid performance kicking 5 goals to 2 in the last quarter to run out 28 point winners.

And boy was Sharkey pissed… I think the Hawks kicked 6 or 7 unanswered goals at one stage looking like stealing the game away, but it was the determination of the pies in the last quarter, along with the hawks running out of legs that let us take the game back and run out winners.

It was good to see Blake and Didak play a great game dominating the forward line kicking 5 and 4 goals respectivly.

Go The Pies !!!!

Its only the second time this year that I’ve been able to scream the theme song at the end of a Collingwood game, but this was one to savor in its full.  We set out to tackle the West Coast Eagles who were undefeated after 8 rounds….  But now they are defeated, and beaten by the team on the bottom of the ladder.

What a great day, beautiful weather in Melbourne for football.  The new stand at the MCG is in the last stages of completion and is looking excellent.

Went to the game today with Puss and we thought that it was going to be a long one when the eagles kicked the first 3 straight.  But we fought back well kicking the next couple finishing out the quarter only 2 goals down, 3.1 to 5.1..

The next quarter we came out blazing, anchored by the back line of Prestie, Wakes and Jimmy-James we launched many attacks with solid running through the center with pinpoint delivery into the forward line..  Dominating play we kicked 7 goals to the eagles 2 to lead 9.3 to 7.2 at half time.

After the long break we came out with gusto, but the eagles had turned it up a notch and reversed the form of the second quarter kicking 6 to our 2 goals.

So at three quarter time it was 11.7 (coll) to 13.3 (wce).  But the final term showed that we did want to win and were willing to run and push to make it happen.. We dominated play again as we did in the second quarter kicking 7 goals 3 to the eagles 2 goals 2.

Final score Pies 18.10 118 to Eagles 15.5 95…

Was great to see the dependency of the solid back line didn’t back down again, and this week our midfield decided to play the game and actually run the ball through the midfield, find space, back themselves and deliver with accuracy.

If there was one stat that showed how we won it was the tackle count. At the end of the game it was 52 tackles to the pies and only 29 to the eagles.. That is a total reflection of how much we wanted the ball, and were willing to put in to get it.

Go the Pies….
